Plant-Based Foods Global Alliance Responds to the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission

The Plant Based Foods Global Alliance (PBFGA),a coalition of associations representing the plant-based foods industry around the world, welcomes the release of the 2025 EAT-Lancet Commission on Healthy, Sustainable and Just Food Systems report and its urgent call for healthier, more sustainable food systems.

Plant-based foods are not only a growing economic engine ($28.6 billion USD in global sales in 2024), their benefits are supported by decades of independent scientific evidence showing that plant-rich diets can reduce the risk of non-communicable diseases, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and use significantly fewer natural resources. Further, plant-based foods provide the protein, fiber, and essential nutrients people need for lifelong health, while placing fewer demands on natural resources. As the Commission makes clear, future food systems must be not only sustainable, but also just, equitable, and resilient. The global plant-based foods industry is proud to contribute to this transformation.

From Asia to Africa, Europe to the Americas, plant-based foods are built from locally grown and locally loved ingredients—soy, peas, chickpeas, lentils, beans, oats, and more. These foods build on existing agricultural traditions while opening opportunities for culinary innovation, showing that plant-rich diets are diverse, culturally rooted, and adaptable to local food traditions worldwide.

This economic growth fuels widespread opportunity. Expanding plant protein production creates new markets for farmers, enhances the resilience and diversity of agricultural systems, drives cross-sectoral innovation, and creates high-quality jobs across food value chains. By investing in plant-based value chain development, countries can simultaneously advance nutrition security, strengthen rural economies, and position themselves at the forefront of future-ready industries.

The Plant Based Foods Global Alliance affirms its commitment to work across borders to increase the production and consumption of plant-based foods. We call on policymakers to integrate plant-based foods into national dietary guidelines, public procurement programs, and climate strategies, ensuring that sustainable diets are accessible, affordable, and supported by science-based regulation. Together, we urge governments, civil society, and industry to accelerate this transition. Plant-based foods are not just an option for the future — they are already a proven, scalable, and inclusive solution to deliver healthier diets, sustainable food systems, and a thriving planet for generations to come.
